The Phoenix Mercury Honors Diana Taurasi with New Practice Facility Courts
The Phoenix Mercury is set to mark the grand opening of its new 58,000-square-foot practice facility in Phoenix’s Warehouse District by paying tribute to the team’s most iconic player.
With a legacy that includes being an 11-time WNBA All-Star, three-time WNBA champion, six-time Olympian, and the league’s all-time leading scorer, Diana Taurasi’s impact on the Mercury and the sport of basketball is unparalleled. In recognition of her contributions, the team has announced that the courts at the state-of-the-art facility will be named after Taurasi, solidifying her place in Mercury history.
Owner Mat Ishbia expressed his enthusiasm for the facility, stating, “We believe in our sport, we believe in the WNBA, and we believe in the Phoenix Mercury. Putting her name on the court is something everyone will see in the future to always remember Diana Taurasi played here.”
The new facility will feature two courts named after Taurasi, adorned with a unique Taurasi-inspired logo, symbolizing her lasting impact on the Mercury.
The courts will be officially unveiled at the grand opening event on July 18, coinciding with the start of WNBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix. The weekend will be filled with exciting events, including the Kia Skills Challenge and Starry Three-Point Challenge on July 19, followed by the WNBA All-Star Game on July 20.
Phoenix Mercury Head Coach Nate Tibbets expressed his appreciation for Taurasi’s contributions, stating, “It’s going to be a really cool thing just for the tradition and history of the Mercury moving forward to recognize the greatest player of all time and putting her name and logo on the floor.”
Despite Taurasi’s absence from recent games due to a leg injury, there is hope for her return before the WNBA All-Star and Olympic break. Tibbets emphasized Taurasi’s dedication and readiness to make a comeback.
In addition to the exciting developments with the new facility, the Mercury also signed rookie guard Celeste Taylor to a seven-day contract, adding to the team’s roster of talent.
