Concerns over school safety have been heightened in the Valley as both Buckeye and Surprise police have taken swift action following threats of violence towards schools.

Surprise Arrest

The Surprise Police Department recently arrested a 14-year-old student from Valley Vista High School after threats of violence were reported. The arrest, which took place on September 24, was made without incident. The teen confessed to making the threat and is now facing charges of making a terroristic threat and disorderly conduct.

Buckeye Incident

In a separate incident in Buckeye, a 12-year-old boy was arrested on September 23 after making a threat directed at Desert Sunset Elementary School in Tartesso. The threat, made in a voicemail to a former teacher, indicated a desire to ‘shoot up’ a classroom. The boy does not attend the school and is facing criminal charges as a result.

Other Recent Incidents

These arrests come in the wake of a series of threats towards schools in the area. Buckeye police recently apprehended a 12-year-old girl for threats towards a school in Wisconsin. Additionally, a teenage boy was arrested in Phoenix for posting mass shooting threats on social media targeting multiple Valley schools, and Mesa police identified children involved in making threatening statements towards a school.
